Course Information

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED r.21 program is designed to help participants recognize and
respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach
participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person when minutes
matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. This program offers a choice of First Aid,
CPR and AED courses in traditional classroom or blended learning (online learning with instructor-led skill
session) formats, in addition to optional skill boosts to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.

There are no prerequisites for the Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course. All are welcome to register!

The course is broken up into two parts, the Online Session which is completed independently by each student prior to the Skills Session. The Skills Session is completed in-person in an instructor-led format.

  • Online Session Length: 3 hours and 50 minutes (varies)
  • Skills Session Length: 2 hours and 30 minutes
 

The course is broken up into two parts:

Part 1: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Online Session

   Course link for online session is emailed to the student following registration.

    The online session must be completed before attending the skills session.

 

Part 2: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Blended Learning Skills Session

   The skills session includes the following modules:

  • Module 1: Course Introduction and Foundations
  • Module 2: Adult CPR and AED
  • Module 3: Pediatric CPR and AED
  • Module 4: Choking
  • Module 5: Life-Threatening Bleeding
  • Module 6: Conclusion
  • Final Written Exam

By successfully completing the course, each student will be able to accomplish the following:

  • Describe how to recognize an emergency and gain confidence to act.
  • Explain how to lower the risk for infection when giving care.
  • Understand legal concepts as they apply to lay responders, such as consent.
  • Describe the emergency action steps: CHECK—CALL—CARE.
  • Identify when it is necessary to call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency number.
  • Explain how to check an injured or ill person who appears to be unresponsive.
  • Explain how to check a responsive injured or ill person.
  • Demonstrate high-quality CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for a person who
    is in cardiac arrest.
  • Demonstrate first aid care for a person who is choking.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following
    sudden illnesses: shock, asthma attack, anaphylaxis, heart attack, opioid overdose, diabetic
    emergencies, high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration.
  • Describe methods used to control life-threatening bleeding, including the application of direct pressure
    and the application of a commercial tourniquet.
  • Demonstrate the application of direct pressure to control life-threatening bleeding.
  • Explain when a commercial tourniquet should be used, and describe the basic principles of using a
    tourniquet.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following injuries
    and environmental illnesses: burns; head, neck and spinal injuries (including concussion); heat stroke;
    hypothermia; poison exposure.
The following requirements must be met to complete the course and earn the American Red Cross Certification for Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid:
 
  • Attend and participate in all class sessions and successfully complete the online session.
  • Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during skill practices
    and assessment.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
  • Successfully complete all assessment scenarios.

Certification: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED

Upon completion of the Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid course, the student will receive an American Red Cross certification that is valid for 2 years from the date of course completion.

Once the certification has been issued, the student’s Digital Certificate can also be found on the American Red Cross website by visiting www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate

The Digital Certificate can be found by searching the student’s Email Address, Name and Date, or by the Certificate ID.

Certification Process

Step 1

Select a date for Skills Session from the selection, then complete the form and submit payment for the course.

Once the payment is processed, Ready Rescuer will submit your registration to the American Red Cross and add you to the class for the date you selected in the registration.

Step 2

You will receive an email from the American Red Cross with information on how to access your Red Cross Learning Center account. Follow the instructions in the email to log into redcrosslearningcenter.org.

If you do not receive an email within 24 hour of registration, please send an email to contact@readyrescuer.com.

Step 3

After logging into Red Cross Learning Center, click on the course to access any digital course materials available and to launch the Online Session which must be completed PRIOR to attending the in-person Skills Session.

Step 4

After completing the Online Session, it is required to attend a Skills Session to complete the certification. Attend the Skills Session selected during registration and pass the assessments and final written exam.

Step 5

After completing the Online Session and Skills Session and successfully passing the assessments and final written exam, you have successfully completed the American Red Cross Blended Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid course! Visit www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate to access you Digital Certificate.
