Course Information
Purpose
The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course provides participants with the knowledge
and skills they need to assess, recognize and care for patients who are experiencing respiratory
arrest, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction or opioid overdose. When a patient experiences a lifethreatening
emergency, healthcare providers need to act swiftly and promptly. The course
emphasizes providing high-quality care and integrating psychomotor skills with critical thinking and
problem solving to achieve the best possible patient outcomes

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for the Basic Life Support course. All are welcome to register!
Length and Format
The course is broken up into two parts, the Online Session which is completed independently by each student prior to the Skills Session. The Skills Session is completed in-person in an instructor-led format.

- Skills Session Length: 2 hours and 35 minutes

The course is broken up into two parts:
Part 1: Basic Life Support Online Session

The online session must be completed before attending the skills session.
Part 2: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Blended Learning Skills Session
The skills session, and includes the following modules:
- Module 1: Course Introduction and Foundations
- Module 2: Adult CPR and AED
- Module 3: Pediatric CPR and AED
- Module 4: Choking
- Module 5: Life-Threatening Bleeding
- Module 6: Conclusion
- Final Written Exam
Learning Objectives
By successfully completing the course, each student will be able to accomplish the following:
- Apply concepts of effective teamwork when caring for a patient experiencing a life-threatening
emergency. - Integrate communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills during a high-performance
BLS team response. - Apply a systematic, continuous approach to assess, recognize and care for adults, children and
infants experiencing a life-threatening emergency. - Perform a rapid assessment for responsive and unresponsive adults, children and infants.
- Effectively care for adults, children and infants in respiratory arrest.
- State the principles of high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants.
- Identify BLS differences among adults, children and infants.
- Provide high-quality chest compressions for adults, children and infants.
- Deliver effective ventilations to adults, children and infants using a pocket mask and bag-valvemask
(BVM) resuscitator. - Demonstrate effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adults, children and
infants. - Provide high-quality BLS care for adults, children and infants in single- and multiple-provider
situations. - Deliver effective abdominal thrusts, back blows and chest thrusts for adults, children and infants
with airway obstruction. - State the principles of care for a patient experiencing an opioid overdose.
Certification Requirements
- Attend and participate in all class sessions and successfully complete the online session.
- Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during skill practices
and assessment. - Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
- Successfully complete all assessment scenarios.
Certificate Issued and Validity Period
Certification: Basic Life Support
Upon completion of the Basic Life Support course, the student will receive an American Red Cross certification that is valid for 2 years from the date of course completion.

Once the certification has been issued, the student’s Digital Certificate can also be found on the American Red Cross website by visiting www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate.
The Digital Certificate can be found by searching the student’s Email Address, Name and Date, or by the Certificate ID.
